Ethanol and Hand Sanitizer

Ethanol biorefineries produce hand sanitizer to help meet demand.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has seen a dramatic increase in demand for hand sanitizer, U.S. ethanol producers rose to the occasion, pivoting to produce high-purity alcohol that comprises between 60% to 80% of every bottle of hand sanitizer.

In many cases, ethanol facilities donated product to local first responders, hospitals, and other essential workers.  To learn more, visit our #RFACommunityPartners page.

Moving forward, we expect a slow and gradual return to whatever “normal” will mean, punctuated with the threat of new surges or other problems down the line. That said, we expect the increased demand for high-purity alcohol for sanitizers to continue well into 2021.
