TORONTO — Today, Bliss Baker, the President of the Global Renewable Fuels Alliance (GRFA), sent letters to congratulate national leaders of 13 countries that highlighted biofuels as part of their Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) plans at the recent Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in Paris.
“These countries should be commended for their leadership in recognizing the significant contributions that ethanol-supportive policies have made, and continue to make, in reducing CO2 emissions in the transport sector,” Baker said.
It is estimated that the transportation sector produces 25-30% of the world’s green house gas (GHG) emissions, making it a priority for national governments as they revise their INDC plans in the lead up to the 2020 implementation date of the COP21 agreement.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), sustainable biofuels, like ethanol, could provide 27% of the world’s total transport fuel by 2050 and avoid around 2.1 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions per year, with biofuels eventually providing 20% of total emission savings in the transport sector.
“If the enormous potential of biofuels as the only commercially viable technology available to significantly offset emissions in the transport sector is to be achieved, strong policies must be put in place to increase global production, innovation and consumption of ethanol,” said Baker.
In its letter, the GRFA offered the expertise of its members to work with government leaders in the development of forward-thinking policies that maximize the advantages of biofuel technologies that are demonstrated to be effective, affordable and immediately available.
