Ethanol Facts
We invite you to review the following Ethanol Facts pages for timely and interesting information about the U.S. ethanol industry. We also encourage you to view our Annual Industry Outlook for additional facts, statistics and charts.
2009 was a record year for ethanol production, with 200 biorefineries producing 10.6 billion gallons of renewable ethanol. Efficiency enhancements and innovations in production combined with improved farming techniques allowed the U.S. ethanol industry to achieve this record with existing corn acreage and reduced process water.
Ethanol has become a ubiquitous component of our nation’s fuel supply, as it is blended in virtually every gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S.
Growing to meet rising demand created by the Renewable Fuels Standard, an additional 16 biorefineries are being built or expanded in 2010 that will add 1.4 billion gallons of new capacity. Click here for a list of current and under construction ethanol biorefineries.

At the same time, new technologies are poised to join the marketplace, creating ethanol from cellulosic feedstocks, further enhancing America’s ability to provide a renewable, sustainable alternative to imported oil.
